Donate blood and help Billerica girl

Eight-year-old Jacqueline Rogers of Billerica needs those with O negative blood to consider donating at Boston Children’s Hospital so that doctors can operate on her heart.

According to her mother Valerie, Jacqueline’s open heart surgery, scheduled for today, Jan. 17, was postponed due to a shortage of O negative blood at the hospital, the only blood type her body can receive.

Candidates needed for Billerica Town Meeting seats

Although the major contests in Billerica’s April 5 town election have been drawing candidates, few have taken out nomination papers for the 80 open Town Meeting member seats.

Only 26 residents have pulled papers as we go to press on Tuesday, so a mere 33 percent of the races have any prospective candidates. There are openings for one, two and three-year terms available in each of the 11 precincts.

A suspicious package left in front of Market Basket at The Shops at Billerica caused quite a scare tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 15, forcing Billerica Police to evacuate the supermarket and adjacent Dollar Tree and call in the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.

The Bomb Squad was called in to evaluate the package and according to Billerica Police Sgt. Steve Elmore, it was determined the bag contained a Crock Pot.

When Jennifer Ryan of Billerica went to Winchester Hospital on New Year’s Eve she thought it would just be for a checkup.

The soon-to-be first time mom noticed her baby, who was due on Jan. 5, wasn’t moving as much as it had been, so she headed in to make sure everything was okay. When she arrived at the hospital, her OB/GYN, Donald Druga, recommended that Jennifer stay the night and deliver her baby the next morning.
