Noredin Morgan: Retrospective Showing at the BATV Gallery September 28 – October 21, 2015 Artist Reception Saturday, October 10, 2015, 2 – 4 pm Artist Statement:
My name is Tom Mungovan. I am an artist, writer, drummer, teacher, learner, entrepreneur, father and husband and am seemingly cloaked in virtual opaqueness. I can be at times a very complicated person. I use sarcastic humor as a deflector to ward off my own true self to anybody that may want to get close to me. I am a dreamer. I am stubborn. I am both selfish and selfless. I always fight for the underdog no matter the situation. I draw odd pictures that I want to be known for, but rarely show people. I impulsively and intuitively create artwork that makes some people wonder why I even bother to waste my time. I write countless poetry books and screenplays that are never seen. I have a knack for confusing people but also bringing them together. I am the founder of a non-profit organization community-based drum festival because there was a simply a need to create one. I hide from myself to protect myself from myself. I am funny. I am shy. I am outgoing. I am an artist. If you wish to know more, please ask. I welcome any conversations about my art. Feel free to email at: tomungovan@gmail.com Artist Statement: I share my birthplace with the Pharaohs of Egypt. My immigration to the US has been the underlying event which has defined my work for many years. Most of my painting is figurative made in a spontaneous, expressive manner. It also addresses identity, displacement, and reflects how the exterior reality affects the idea of who I am. Some might suggest relationship, story, or other significant moments in time. I have a strong sense of person's presence. I feel that I recognize their face and read their movement on the stage of life... as if they were placed there just for my sake. They move so that I may depict their movement. They grant me the right to reduce their figures to lines, spots and colors. They allow me to transform them into impressive and mighty beings or to mere phantoms. This helps me to discover my own path to the invisible reality and determines the affinity with my thought process, like the flow of ideas, to create a collage with different subjects that results in a visual relationship.
